Otu Oka-iwu was established as a collective forum for Igbo legal practitioners to promote professional collaboration, uphold ethical standards, and protect the interests of Igbo people through the rule of law. The Abuja Branch emerged as a strategic extension of this vision, bringing together learned men and women of Igbo extraction practicing within the seat of power; the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Since its inception, the Abuja Branch has continued to distinguish itself through consistent engagement in legal, socio-cultural, and policy discourse, fostering a strong sense of brotherhood, mentorship, and solidarity among members.
This principle underscores the spirit of brotherhood, mutual support, and collective progress that defines the Otu Oka-iwu community. It is this fraternal philosophy that continues to inspire the association’s activities and strengthen the bond among its members.
The Otu Oka-iwu, Abuja, has been blessed with visionary and selfless leaders who have steered the association through various phases of growth and consolidation.
Chief Ikechukwu Ezechukwu, SAN, was the pioneer President of Otu Oka-Iwu, Abuja. A revered Senior Advocate of Nigeria, he led the association with exceptional wisdom, laying a solid foundation of unity, professionalism, and service. His tenure was marked by credibility, inclusivity, and the establishment of enduring traditions that continue to guide the association.
He was succeeded by Chief Ejiofor Onwuaso, Esq., whose administration witnessed renewed emphasis on member welfare, mentorship, and cultural renaissance within the association. Under his leadership, Otu Oka-iwu, Abuja gained stronger visibility in national legal discourse.
The mantle of leadership was subsequently handed over to Sir Chidiebere Udekwe (KSM) in April 2024, following a democratic election. His administration continues to consolidate on the achievements of his predecessors, promoting active participation, inclusivity, and professional excellence among members.
In accordance with the association’s Constitution, the leadership tenure of Otu Oka-iwu, Abuja, spans three (3) years per term.
The Abuja Branch operates under a democratically elected Executive Committee, headed by a President, Vice President, General Secretary, and other key officers who manage the association’s affairs.
Membership is open to all lawyers of Igbo origin, whether patrilineal or matrilineal, who are duly enrolled as legal practitioners in Nigeria and practicing or residing within Abuja and its environs.
The association enjoys a rich generational blend, comprising Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), Judges, Magistrates, senior and young legal practitioners, reflecting its inclusiveness and professional diversity.
Over the years, Otu Oka-iwu, Abuja, has made remarkable contributions in:
- Promoting unity among Igbo lawyers within the FCT.
- Serving as a strong voice in legal and national discourse, especially on issues affecting the Southeast region.
- Extending humanitarian assistance and engaging in community development initiatives.
- Encouraging active participation of Igbo lawyers in leadership positions within the NBA and other legal institutions.
The Branch has also hosted numerous high-profile legal and cultural events, including Law Week, Symposia, the Annual General Festival (Mgbede Egwu Onwa), Cultural Dinners, and mentorship programs such as the Igba Boyi Mentorship Apprenticeship Scheme for young lawyers, often graced by eminent jurists, senior advocates, and political leaders
Otu Oka-iwu, Abuja Branch, stands today as a bastion of intellectual strength, cultural pride, and professional excellence. Under the visionary leadership of successive Presidents – Chief Ikechukwu Ezechukwu, SAN, Chief Ejiofor Onwuaso, Esq., and Sir Chidiebere Udekwe (KSM), the association has remained steadfast in its commitment to unity, justice, and service.
Through its programs and initiatives, Otu Oka-iwu, Abuja, continues to uphold the dignity of the legal profession, advocate for fairness in Nigeria’s multi-ethnic society, and contribute meaningfully to national dialogue, good governance, and the preservation of democratic ideals.
